Sen. Dick Durbin said there is no chance of impeaching Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh after a New York Times article came out over the weekend with a new allegation of sexual misconduct.
“Get real,” the Illinois Democrat said Monday, according to Politico. “We’ve got to get beyond this ‘impeachment is the answer to every problem.’ It’s not realistic.”
“If that’s how we are identified in Congress, as the impeachment Congress, we run the risk that people will feel we’re ignoring the issues that mean a lot to them as families,” he added. Durbin, 74, is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which oversaw the confirmation of Kavanaugh.
In the aftermath of the New York Times piece, several Democratic presidential candidates came out in support of impeaching Kavanaugh.
South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said there was also no chance of impeaching the Supreme Court justice over “scurrilous accusations.”
The New York Times published a piece this weekend which cited unnamed officials who claimed Max Stier witnessed Kavanaugh have pushing his penis into an unnamed woman’s hand during a party. The woman said the event never happened, according to friends.
The New York Times was forced to issue a correction after the original piece did not include the woman’s denial.
