Woman dies after jumping into path of Blue Line train

Update 9:35 a.m.: An adult woman was killed after she jumped into the path of an inbound train at the Van Dorn Street Metro station, becoming the transit system’s first suicide of 2012.

Police believe she intentionally put herself into the path of the train based on video footage, plus accounts from witnesses and the train operator, Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said.

Trains had to share a single track around the area after the 7:15 a.m. incident. The train that hit her had been cleared from the area as of 9:35 a.m. but the track remained closed as the investigation and clean up continued.

Her death was the second suicide attempt of 2012. Just before midnight on Wednesday, a 61-year-old D.C. resident was hit by a Blue Line train at Metro Center. He was hospitalized in serious condition.

Orginal post at 8:37 a.m.: Trains on Metro’s Blue Line were single tracking this morning after a person apparently entered the path of a train intentionally at the Van Dorn Street Station, Metro officials said.

The person was struck about 7:15 a.m. Delays were occurring in both directions from the station.

Trains are single tracking between the Van Dorn Street and Franconia-Springfield stations.

Every other Blue Line train will operate to and from the Huntington Station to ease congestion in the area. Metro officials said platforms might become crowded for customers leaving the Franconia-Springfield Station.
