THE 3-MINUTE INTERVIEW: Paola Moya

Moya, a Colombian native and resident of Silver Spring, is responsible for bringing the historic Howard Theater back to life this year as the interior architect of the landmark’s restoration.

What was it like entering the theater for the first time?

It was scary! It was a perfect venue for filming a scary movie. The building has been abandoned for so many years. There was no electricity, everything was leaking and completely deteriorated. We joked that when we were going to the Howard, we would tell someone at the office, just to make sure we weren’t going to be trapped there.

Eek! So how did you start the designing process?

We actually got a lot of inspiration from fashion boutiques in New York, you know, like big light boxes that are almost 10 feet tall, or having lights that hang from the ceiling 10, 20 feet. We wanted something modern but also that had elegance to it.

Which elements of the old theater are staying put?

We’re keeping five historic columns in the same spots. With some features, like the dome in the main chamber, we’re keeping the essence there but with a contemporary influence. In the vein, we’re going to have images of Marvin Gaye and other artists who performed at the Howard throughout the building.

And what will be brand-new? What was the focus of your updates?

It’s a public venue, so once you open the doors you’ll be there for two, three, four hours. The main idea was to create a contemporary venue but also have a warm feeling. We’re using materials like walnut throughout the theater — earthy tones and materials. There will also be a full kitchen, so patrons will have the luxury to sit, have dinner and enjoy the show. Oh, and on Sunday, there will be gospel brunch!
