Flights delayed after climate protesters glue themselves to Berlin airport runways

Climate change protesters glued themselves to the runway of the Berlin airport in Germany on Thursday.

Protesters claiming to be part of an organization called the Last Generation were protesting air travel and the effects it has on the environment, namely through high carbon emissions. As a result of their protest, the airport had to close its runways briefly.

“The plane is not a means of transport for ordinary people,” Last Generation said in a statement. “Most people — about 80 percent of the world’s population — have never flown in their lives. One affluent percent of the population is responsible for around half of flight-related greenhouse gas emissions.”

After roughly two hours, the airport’s runways were reopened, but the airport warned that flights could still be delayed.

The Environmental Protection Agency reports that commercial airplanes and large business jets contribute 8% of U.S. transportation emissions and 12% of global transportation emissions, according to the Air Transport Action Group. Globally, the industry contributes 2.1% of carbon dioxide.

Most recently, two women associated with the Last Generation superglued themselves to handrails in front of a display that featured a large four-legged dinosaur at Berlin’s Natural History Museum. They held a banner that read, “What if the government doesn’t have it under control?” in German. They remained glued to the display for 20 minutes.
