Vice President Mike Pence expressed optimism Saturday that the U.S. and its allies would soon be concluding a “successful renegotiation” of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
The administration is trying to negotiate an agreement by May to ensure the revised deal is approved by a the Republican-controlled Congress.
“We think we’re close,” Pence said, speaking to press on the sidelines of the Americas Summit in Lima, Peru. “We are encouraged with the progress of our negotiations, and we are hopeful that we can conclude a successful renegotiation.”
Pence made the comments at a bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Trudeau said he also looks forward to “talking about progress in the NAFTA negotiations” with the U.S., according to a pool report.
