Top 5: Previous results in Slams for Fish

At 29 years old, Mardy Fish is in Wimbledon’s fourth round for the first time and the last American left in the gentlemen’s draw. Here are his best previous finishes in a Grand Slam:

5. 2003 Australian Open, third round » Setting the tone for a year he would end ranked No. 20 in the world, Fish upset fifth-seeded Carlos Moya in the second round 3-6, 7-6 (8), 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 and had a two sets to none lead over Wayne Ferreira in the third before melting down in a 2-6, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-0 defeat.

4. 2007 Australian Open, quarterfinals » Fish’s best finish in any Grand Slam to this point in his career ended in a straight sets loss (6-2, 6-2, 6-2) to his old roommate and doubles partner Andy Roddick, who was torched in the semifinals by tourney winner Roger Federer.

3. 2003 Wimbledon, third round » In his second career appearance in the main draw, Fish scored a pair of upsets in the first two rounds and took a set from eventual champion Federer before falling 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.

2. 2010 U.S. Open, quarterfinals » After requiring five sets to defeat Jan Hajek in the first round and Arnaud Clement in the third, Fish was overwhelmed by eventual finalist Novak Djokovic in the quarters 6-3, 6-4, 6-1.

1. 2008 U.S. Open, quarterfinals » Things started out shaky at Flushing Meadows as Fish nipped Robert Smeets in a dicey 7-6 (4), 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4 first-round victory. But solid wins over 24th-seeded Paul-Henri Mathieu, ninth-seeded James Blake and 32nd-seeded Gael Monfils followed, and Fish took the first set of his quarterfinal against eventual semifinalist Rafael Nadal only to lose 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.
