WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) — A Waukegan man wants to withdraw the guilty plea entered in connection with the stabbing death of a Round Lake man and the injuring of a teenager.
A Lake County judge on Wednesday scheduled an Aug. 26 hearing on a request made by the attorney for Zervont Thomas. The 21-year-old Thomas in June pleaded guilty but mentally ill to first-degree murder in the death of 33-year-old Stefan Metel. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Authorities say Thomas became angry as he rode with Metel when the victim said he was going to make a stop before dropping Thomas off at another destination.
The Lake County News-Sun reports (http://bit.ly/Xg6Jc8) Judge Mark Levitt ordered a psychiatric report on Thomas.
Defense attorney LaTonya Burton says she’s reviewing transcripts of previous hearings.
