President-elect Trump has narrowed his list of secretary of state contenders to “four potential candidates,” transition officials said Wednesday.
The race for secretary of state has played out in an unusually public way as aides air their views on rumored contenders.
Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani are two of the four finalists for the position, transition officials said Wednesday. Jason Miller, spokesman for the transition team, declined to identify the other two contenders.
However, retired Gen. David Petraeus and Sen. Bob Corker have been mentioned in connection with the coveted Cabinet post. Both met with the president-elect earlier this week.
Following his visit with Petraeus, Trump announced he was “very impressed” with the former CIA director.
Trump has met twice with Romney. On Tuesday evening, he and incoming chief of staff Reince Priebus dined with the former GOP nominee in Manhattan, after which Romney said he had been heartened by what he has seen from the president-elect since his victory in the election.
Republican National Committee spokesman Sean Spicer said on a conference call with reporters that Trump’s team doesn’t anticipate any further Cabinet announcements for the rest of this week.
