Defense lawyer: No known cause of death in lacrosse murder

CHARLOTTESVILLE – George Huguely’s lawyer argued Wednesday morning that there is no known cause of death for Yeardley Love, the 22-year-old University of Virginia lacrosse player Huguely is charged with beating to death.

Defense lawyer Francis McQ. Lawrence said Love’s skull and brain injuries were not serious enough to kill her. Charlottesville’s chief medical examiner ruled Love died from blunt force trauma to the head in July, two months after police found her bloodied body early May 3 in her campus apartment.

We have serious issues as to the cause of death, ongoing … months later,” Lawrence said before Judge Robert H. Downer Jr. He petitioned the court for access to Love’s medical records, dating back four to six years, to find out whether she was taking any prescription drugs — or had any preexisting conditions — that could have contributed to her death.

Charlottesville prosecutor Dave Chapman said Love was legally prescribed to the drug, which is typically given for attention deficit disorder.

Judge Downer said he would review the medical records, which he has, to determine when they are significant to the case.
