Clay Aiken’s bid for office might not have launched him into Congress, but it will certainly launch him back onto reality television.
Aiken, who is known for his appearance on the second season of “American Idol” and who lost his bid for the congressional seat in North Carolina’s 2nd district Tuesday, will now be the subject of a four-hour documentary series on Esquire Network, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The cable network announced Tuesday following Aiken’s loss that a camera crew has been crashing his campaign since February when he revealed his plan to run.
Alas, the docuseries will spotlight his defeat in the race against Republican Rep. Renee Ellmers. Just as he did on “American Idol,” Aiken will finish in second place at the conclusion of the show.
Simon and Jonathan Chinn are producing the series, which will air sometime at the beginning of 2015.
“We were granted incredible access during the making of this documentary, and in turn were able to capture the internal workings of an American campaign — the good, the bad and the ugly,” explained Simon Chinn.
Matt Hanna, the head of original programming at Esquire Network, also appeared excited about Aiken’s upcoming renewed presence on the small screen as a representation of American politics.
“Ultimately, this series is a raw and honest look at American politics through an incredibly unique and compelling candidate,” detailed Hanna. “The opportunity to work with amazing documentarians Simon and Jonathan Chinn, gave Esquire Network the perfect opportunity to explore politics and its intersection with celebrity.”
The series is yet to be named, but the title will likely fall somewhere between “American Idol” and “House of Cards.”
