Donald Trump is vetting Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker as a running mate, according to a report Tuesday evening.
The Republican lawmaker spent the day in New York with Trump, where he participated in meetings with campaign officials, reported the Washington Post Tuesday afternoon. He then hitched a ride on Trump’s plane to Raleigh, N.C., where the presumptive GOP nominee held a campaign rally. The two appeared on stage together where Trump called for the party to unite behind him.
“We need unity in the Republican Party and for the most part, we have unity,” Trump said. “We have some great people like Bob [Corker] and so many others.”
Corker’s office declined to comment on whether he was being vetted as a vice presidential candidate. Trump’s campaign did not return a request for comment.
The junior senator from Tennessee of nearly 10 years who heads the powerful Foreign Affairs committee, would bring a healthy dose of international experience to the Trump ticket.
Other names floating around on Trump’s possible VP shortlist include Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst, with whom he met Monday, as well as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence and N.J. Gov. Chris Christie.
