An Arizona lawmaker has come down with COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated against the virus.
“I have taken Covid-19 very seriously and have worn my mask, washed my hands, socially distanced,” said State Rep. Alma Hernandez in a statement. “Yet despite those measures and being vaccinated I have come down with Covid.”
‘A DOSE OF HOPE’: BIDEN IMPLORES PUBLIC TO GET THE VACCINE DURING JOINT ADDRESS
The story comes as federal and local officials continue to urge citizens to get vaccinated against the virus, billing the vaccine as a way to return to normal after more than a year of restrictions have wreaked havoc on the nation’s economy.
But a large portion of the population remains skeptical of the vaccines, a challenge officials grapple with as they attempt to vaccinate enough people to reach herd immunity.
Despite it being rare to catch the virus after being fully vaccinated, such cases have been documented. Health experts place the chances at less than one in 3,000, while those that do come down with the virus after receiving the vaccine report milder cases.
“My symptoms as of now are pretty mild,” Hernandez said after becoming one of those rare cases. “I will quarantine in my Phoenix home until next Wednesday and I encourage you all to take this seriously and continue practicing Covid protocols.”
Hernandez said it is “up to all of us to work together to defeat this pandemic,” warning it has not yet “come to an end.”

“Be courteous to your colleagues who are more susceptible,” Hernandez said. “This pandemic has not come to an end. Be safe, take care do not let your guard down even after you have been vaccinated.”
