The wounds were 5 to 8 inches long, court documents said.

The Kennedy High School senior told police that she saw the victim, a student at Montgomery Blair High School, having a physical fight in the parking lot with a friend of Funes.

Funes said she used a knife she was carrying in her jacket pocket to repeatedly stab the girl, then fled from the school in her vehicle, according to court records.

The wounds were “very substantial,” prosecutor Peter Feeney said at a bond review hearing Thursday.

As Funes was being transported to the jail Wednesday, she told an officer, “maybe she learned her lesson,” referring to the victim, Feeney said.

It wasn’t clear what sparked the original altercation. Feeney said it appears there had been a “percolating” dispute among the girls involved.

He said he didn’t know how long the victim was in the hospital, but she had been released as of Thursday afternoon.

Feeney argued that Funes should remain held without bond. Defense attorney A.P. Pishevar said Funes should be able to be released because of her age and cooperation with investigators.

”She did turn herself in,” he said.

Funes appeared via a video hookup and did not speak during the brief hearing. Several of her family members wept in the front row of the courtroom when she appeared on screen in a tan prison jumpsuit.

Judge J. Michael Conroy set a $250,000 bond for Funes, but she remained incarcerated as of early Thursday evening, according to online court records.

Outside the courtroom, Pishevar said Funes has been accepted to colleges and has no prior criminal record.

”She’s a young lady with a future,” he said.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 22.

<a href=” mailto:[email protected] “>[email protected]
