As far as creative ways to ask a girl to the prom, you can’t do much better than Spencer Joynt did Wednesday night.
Joynt and his girlfriend, Courtney Prillaman — both students at Georgetown Day School — were seated in the 10th row at the Warner Theatre for Spinal Tap’s “Unwigged and Unplugged” show of music and comedy when Joynt sprung his surprise.
Early in the show, famous funnyman Harry Shearer said there was a little bit of “personal business” to take care of. “Courtney, will you go to the prom with Spencer?” he asked.
And an hour later, he reiterated: “In case the message didn’t get through earlier, Courtney, will you go to the prom with Spencer?”
Shearer’s bandmate Michael McKean then asked the audience, “Do you think Courtney should go to the prom with Spencer?” Much applause ensued.
Now, the backstory: Shearer and his wife are Spencer’s godparents. And as we reported, the members of the band — Shearer, McKean and Christopher Guest — spent their afternoon at Nathans of Georgetown being interviewed by Spencer’s mother, Carol Joynt, for an episode of her “Q&A Café.”
For the record, she accepted.
