Lori Lightfoot is a symptom of Chicago’s Democratic decay

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s sanctuary city doesn’t have the resources to care for a few hundred illegal immigrants. Lightfoot also can’t get crime under control.

So what, exactly, would Lori Lightfoot say she is doing here?

McDonald’s President and CEO Chris Kempczinski is the latest prominent Chicagoan to raise the alarm over crime. Kempczinski said that crime, among other issues in the city, is making it harder to recruit employees. The company could join several others that have moved their headquarters out of the Windy City.

Lightfoot took office in May 2019, a year when Chicago tallied 498 homicides. On Sunday, with more than three months to go in 2022, Chicago marked its 500th homicide of the year.

In 2020, Lightfoot’s first full year as mayor, the city saw 772 homicides. In 2021, that number hit 797, the most homicides in the city since 1996.

Meanwhile, the city that has propped itself up as a welcoming sanctuary city for illegal immigrants has resorted to busing them to nearby cities such as Elk Grove Village and Burr Ridge. Lightfoot is whining that her city doesn’t have the resources and should be receiving funds that are going to Texas. Chicago, with a population of nearly 2.7 million people, apparently pretended to be a sanctuary city even though it can’t handle a couple hundred illegal immigrants. Smaller and much poorer Texas border towns absorb thousands of illegal immigrants every single day, but Chicago can’t handle even a small fraction of that.

Lightfoot should really be grateful that there are people coming to Chicago, which had the worst net outbound migration totals of “any metropolitan area in the nation” in 2021. Last year, Chicago lost a number of residents greater than the entire population equivalent of either Green Bay, Wisconsin, or South Bend, Indiana. And is it any wonder, between the crime and the sanctimonious promises?

Chicago is a failing city, and that fact reflects on its mayor.

Lightfoot is only the latest example of Democratic decay in America’s big cities. Chicago has been run by Democrats since 1931, they have enjoyed a monopoly on power for decades, and the results are right there in front of everyone. Because there is only one party in Chicago, the standards for Democratic candidates continue to get lower. Lightfoot is an incompetent trainwreck who expected to spend her mayoralty chasing media headlines for her bold, corporate-approved social justice sloganeering. When real problems arise that affect Chicago residents, she has no answers — indeed, she doesn’t even know the questions, and her successor will almost surely be even less competent than she is.
