A Maryland husband and wife are acting as spokespeople for a Department of Transportation campaign against distracted driving.
Russell and Kim Hurd, of Abington, are featured in the department’s latest “Faces of Distracted Driving” video. The couple’s daughter, Heather, was killed in a Florida car crash in January 2008 when a truck driver traveling at 65 mph — and sending text messages to his company — didn’t brake at a red light.
In the Hurds’ video, they talk about their daughter and the crash, warning others about the consequences of distracted driving.
They have become advocates against distracted driving since the crash, and aggressively lobbied for Maryland’s law that bans texting while driving, which passed in 2009.
The video series raises awareness about driving and cell phone use by profiling families who have lost loved ones in distracted-driving crashes.
