Trump opens first field offices in N.C., while Clinton opens No. 20

Donald Trump’s presidential campaign plans to open three new offices in North Carolina, less than a week after the Republican presidential nominee pulled ahead of Hillary Clinton for the first time in a poll of voters in the Tar Heel State.

Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara, will travel to Charlotte on Wednesday to oversee the opening of campaign offices in the city and surrounding area. She and Eric Trump joined the candidate on the campaign trail in Wilmington, N.C., earlier this month.

The campaign’s expansion of its field operation in North Carolina comes as Trump faces an increasingly difficult path to an Electoral College majority.

With the exception of a Suffolk University poll released last week, which showed him carrying a 3-point lead, Trump has trailed closely behind Hillary Clinton in state-level polling for months.

In mid-August, the Charlotte News and Observer reported that Trump had not yet opened a single campaign office in North Carolina, while his Democratic opponent had 19 up-and-running across the state. Last week, Clinton outspent Trump by more than $1 million on television advertising in the battleground state.

Clinton is expected to open a fourth campaign office in Charlotte on Thursday, one day after Lara Trump and former “Celebrity Apprentice” contestant Omarosa Manigault meet with volunteers and launch their trio of new campaign offices in the state.
