Hoyas shut down Eagles early
Last season against Georgetown, American jumped out early, led by as many as six points, and survived most of the first half before losing by 17 points.
This year, the Eagles couldn’t even make it to the first TV timeout. The Hoyas defense forced seven turnovers and a blocked shot in American’s first eight possessions, breezing to an easy 73-49 victory in front of 11,196 at Verizon Center.
Jessie Sapp (14 points) and DaJuan Summers (14 points) hit consecutive 3-pointers on Georgetown’s first two possessions, part of a 13-0 run to start the game.
Chris Wright had a game- and career-high 22 points for the Hoyas (5-1), who took a 40-12 advantage into halftime and led by as many as 32 early in the second half.
The Eagles (4-4), who dropped their third straight game, got nine points each from Derrick Mercer and Garrison Carr, but Carr was just 2-for-17 from the field, hitting one of 11 attempts from 3-point range.
Simpson scores 16 to lead Hampton to win, 45-39
NEW YORK – Vincent Simpson scored 16 points to lead Hampton to a 45-39 victory over Howard on Saturday.
Simpson hit a pair of 3-pointers and was the only player to score in double-figures for the Pirates (5-3, 1-0 MEAC), who only made six field-goals in the second half but still managed to cling to a lead they built by halftime.
Paul Kirkpatrick scored 10 points to lead Howard (1-6, 0-1), which shot just 19 percent (4-for-21) from the field in the first half of a game played at Madison Square Garden. — AP
George Mason ekes out win over Drexel, 56-55
PHILADELPHIA – Darryl Monroe had nine points and five rebounds to help George Mason to a last-second win over Drexel, 56-55, on Saturday.
With three seconds remaining and Drexel (2-2, 0-1 Colonial Athletic Association) down by three, Scott Rodgers drove to the basket and was intentionally fouled by Monroe, giving Rodgers two shots and the Dragons the ball back.
After Rodgers made both shots, Evan Neisler missed a fall-away jumper at the buzzer.
Eight of nine Patriots that entered the game scored for George Mason (6-2, 1-0).
The Patriots went on a 17-4 run to start the second half. Dre Smith’s three-point play gave the Patriots a 17-point lead, their largest of the game, at 15:44.
Drexel responded with a 17-4 run of their own, led by Gerald Colds, who scored 11 straight points for the Dragons.
George Mason started out slow, but used an 11-2 run to earn a 27-23 lead at the break.
Neisler scored 14 points and had 11 rebounds to lead the Dragons. — AP
