Trump attacks his own Justice Department over blocked travel ban

President Trump criticized his own Justice Department Monday over his blocked travel ban that his administration has asked the Supreme Court to reinstate.

In a series of early morning tweets, Trump said the revised travel ban was a “watered down, politically correct” version of what he wanted to put in place, and called on his Justice Department to seek a “much tougher version.”

“People, the lawyers and the courts can call it whatever they want, but I am calling it what we need and what it is, a TRAVEL BAN!” Trump wrote.

“The Justice Dept. should have stayed with the original Travel Ban, not the watered down, politically correct version they submitted to S.C.,” he continued.

“The Justice Dept. should ask for an expedited hearing of the watered down Travel Ban before the Supreme Court – & seek much tougher version!”

The tweets came two days after an attack in London left seven people dead and dozens more injured. In response to the attack, Trump called on the courts to uphold his controversial travel ban.

“We need to be smart, vigilant and tough,” Trump tweeted Saturday. “We need the courts to give us back our rights. We need the Travel Ban as an extra level of safety!”

Trump issued the executive order a week into his presidency to ban travel from Iraq, Iran, Libya, Sudan, Somalia, Syria and Yemen for 90 days. It banned Syrian refugees indefinitely from entering the U.S.

The order was blocked in February by the Ninth Circuit, leading the Trump administration to issue a revised ban in March, which omitted Iraq from the list of countries and removed the ban on Syrian refugees.

“In any event we are EXTREME VETTING people coming into the U.S. in order to help keep our country safe. The courts are slow and political!” Trump tweeted Monday.
