Terps get historic with lax hires

Two of the most storied players in Maryland women’s lacrosse history have returned to the Terps to fill the coaching void left by Cindy Timchal’s departure.

Cathy Nelson Reeseand Jen Adams, who each won four national championships with the Terrapins as players, have been announced as Maryland’s head coach and associate head coach, respectively.

“Cathy and Jen are considered to be the best up-and-coming coaching duo in women’s lacrosse nationally,” said Terrapins associate athletic director Randy Eaton.

Timchal ended her 16 years as head coach earlier this month to start the women’s lacrosse program at Navy.

Nelson Reese and Adams, who have both been assistants for Timchal, return to College Park from the University of Denver, where Reese spent three years and was named Mountain Pacific coach of the year in 2006 after guiding the Pioneers to a program-best record of 15-5. Adams was her top assistant the last two seasons.

Nelson Reese was the 1998 NCAA Tournament Most Valuable Player and is eighth on the Maryland career assists list with 77.

Adams recently was named to the NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse 25th anniversary team. She holds all-time NCAA records of 445 points and 178 assists as well as Maryland records for career goals (267), single-season goals (88), single-season assists (60), single-season points (148) and single-game points (12).

Maryland finished 12-8 last season, losing to Duke in the ACC semifinals and North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
