Authorities are looking for two men involved in the attempted robbery and shooting of an off-duty D.C. police officer who was headed to work Tuesday afternoon.
The 22-year-old police officer likely was saved by the bulltetproof vest he was wearing under his coat, police said. Police are not releasing the officer’s name because he is a witness to the shooting.
The officer, who had been on the force for 20 months, had been visiting a friend in Southeast Washington when he was approached by the two men the 2600 block of Stanton Road SE. The suspects began to search the man and when they discovered he was a police officer, one of the men shot him.
They fled in a gray or silver Oldsmobile. The officer was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. Incoming Police Chief Cathy Lanier rode with him. Anyone who has information regarding this case is asked to call 202-727-9099. D.C. police are offering a $10,000 reward to anyone who provides information that leads to a conviction.
