First case of coronavirus in Belgium confirmed

Belgium has confirmed its first case of coronavirus, making it the 25th country to report a case of the mysterious disease within its borders.

Belgium’s health ministry announced Tuesday that one of nine people the Belgian government had repatriated from Wuhan, China, had contracted the disease, according to the Associated Press. The coronavirus first appeared in Wuhan in January.

Including Belgium, confirmed cases of the coronavirus have now appeared in 25 countries.

The Belgian patient did not yet show any symptoms of the disease, appeared healthy, and is being treated in a special hospital. The other Belgian citizens taken out of Wuhan are under observation.

China’s Ministry of Health reported its deadliest day on Monday since the outbreak started. The number of fatalities due to the disease in the country increased by 64 to 425. The health ministry also reported 3,235 new coronavirus patients, bringing the total number of infected to more than 20,000.

The United States has recorded five cases of the disease. The U.S. confirmed its second case of human-to-human transmission of the disease on Monday. Dozens of potential patients under observation for the disease are being quarantined.
