After 38 years, Carroll County Circuit Court Clerk Larry Shipley is not seeking re-election, leaving the position open for two Carroll County Republicans.
Carroll County Trust Clerk Marlene K. Titus, 46, and Carroll County Chief Deputy Clerk Sarah Hackett, 53, have announced their plans to compete for the post.
Among the duties of the four-year position with an $82,000 salary are:
» Recording and documenting all civil proceedings, criminal cases and land transfers
» Conducting civil marriage ceremonies
» Issuing business licenses
» Swearing in elected officials
Titus said her years of experience as a litigator in Maryland make her the best candidate. In addition, she cited her leadership roles in various civic organizations and her duties as county trust clerk, which she has held since 2004.
Hackett has been the chief deputy clerk of the Carroll County Circuit Court since 2002 and has been working in the clerk?s office, in one capacity or another, since 1975.
Shipley, 61, said he plans to work on his house and travel.
Candidates
» As of Friday, Carroll County Trust Clerk Marlene K. Titus and Carroll County Chief Deputy Clerk Sarah Hackett were the only candidates who filed to run for the clerk?s office. The deadline is July 3.
» If they run unopposed and no write-in votes occur, the election could be decided in the Sept. 12 primary.The winner of the primary would run unopposed on the November ballot.
