Pelosi disses Trump in last press conference as House speaker

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) took one more opportunity to knock her least favorite president before she steps down from leadership.

At her last Thursday press conference, Pelosi discussed her tenure under four presidents and said the hardest political waters to navigate were under a Democratic president while her party was in the minority in Congress. She declined to name former President Donald Trump.

“I was speaker and minority leader under President Bush, under President Obama, under what’s-his-name,” Pelosi said, referring to Trump. “The hardest thing that I had to do is when we had a Democratic president and we were in the minority, as minority leader, was to sustain a presidential veto. Because the Republicans would roll out stuff that sounded like a chocolate sundae, but it’s more like doggy doo.”

Pelosi similarly would not acknowledge Trump’s presidency when she announced her plans to step down from party leadership in November. When recounting her 20 years in leadership, she pointedly noted that she has “enjoyed working with three presidents,” though the total number of presidents she has worked under is four.

During her last press conference, Pelosi dolled out advice for women hoping to make it in politics. She extolled them to be confident and reflected on how the number of women in the House has increased drastically from when she was first elected in the 1990s.

“I have been overwhelmed by women telling me how I’ve given them confidence or what a role model I have been,” she said. “And I say, ‘Don’t worry about any role model. Be yourself.’”

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) will take over as Democratic leader when the new session of Congress begins in January. Pelosi is staying on in Congress as a rank-and-file member.
