Comedian John Crist said if Jesus were alive today, “he’d be the first guy canceled.”
The comedian is returning to the stage and appeared on Fox & Friends Friday to discuss his new book, Delete That. In the book, Crist writes about his need to be honest about both personal successes and failures in a resistance of cancel culture.

“Although Christian culture typically lags behind mainstream culture in most areas, we were totally out front of the mainstream when it comes to this whole idea of canceling people,” Crist shared from an excerpt in his book. “I am confident that Jesus himself would struggle to avoid the judgmental tsk-tsks of Christianity’s supposed army of online defenders.”
“Long hair? Sandals? Hanging out with drunks, prostitutes, and sinners?” he continued. “If [Jesus] were alive today, he’d be the first guy canceled. Oh wait, he already was.”
Crist, who professes to be a Christian and often uses his experiences growing up in the church to form content for his comedy sets, has said he does not set out to preach, reportedly likening his shows to a cobbler who uses his talents to make the best shoes possible.

“Funny can be your life,” Crist said. “You find out that hundreds and thousands and millions of people, in fact, relate to the same thing.”
In 2019, Crist faced accusations of sexual harassment leading him to cancel his comedy tour and Netflix special at the time. He is back on tour with show dates currently scheduled across the United States through April.
