The View co-host Meghan McCain claimed President Trump may try to use the coronavirus pandemic to enact “draconian” measures to personally benefit himself.
“My argument for keeping the press conferences is: I think we’re at a place where President Trump — he’s always been a sort of totalitarian president in a way that we’ve never historically seen before,” she said on Monday’s show.
“My fear is that he’s going to play on the American public’s fears in a draconian way and possibly do something akin to the Patriot Act going forward where he uses this moment in time to play off our fears for his own benefit,” she continued.
Co-host Sunny Hostin, however, disagreed with McCain’s assessment that the major networks should continue airing Trump’s coronavirus briefings, claiming that “people are dying” from misinformation provided during the press conferences.
“I just don’t even think that certain networks should even air these press conferences,” the host said. “I think they are akin to Trump’s rallies. I think they’re dangerous for the American public. I mean, I almost think that you listen to them at your own peril.”
Hostin also suggested that the president might be promoting the drug hydroxychloroquine as a potential COVID-19 treatment in order to benefit himself financially.
So far, Trump has a positive approval rating from his handling of the coronavirus, according to RealClearPolitics.
