Calendar girls

It’s becoming something of a tradition in conservative circles: As the New Year arrives, so, too, does the annual pinup calendar of conservative women, brought to you by the Clare Booth Luce Policy Institute.

Abandoning all suspense, this year’s women are: political commentator Bay Buchanan, urban activist Star Parker, health care activist Grace-Marie Turner, the Heritage Foundation’s Bridgett Wagner, “conservative feminist” Christina Hoff Sommers, pundit Michelle Malkin, Townhall.com reporter Amanda Carpenter,

former Virginia GOP Chairwoman Kate Obenshain, author and calendar stalwart Ann Coulter, activist Cleta Mitchell, Luce Institute senior fellow Miriam Grossman and the late Clare Booth Luce herself, the former congresswoman from Connecticut and ambassador to Italy.

The calendar “features smart, beautiful women we send to college campuses every year to impact the lives of young women,” Michelle Easton, the president of the organization, writes in her introduction. “And as a special treat, for 2008 we hired our own photographer to capture a unique portrait of each woman in a setting that reflects their individuality.”

She also fantasizes about a day when a conservative women’s magazine competes for supermarket shelf space with Glamour and Cosmopolitan. She writes: “Instead of, say, Paris Hilton gracing the cover in all her vacant glory, you see Star Parker or Michelle Malkin modeling the latest professional styles. And rather than being bombarded with teasers like ‘50 ways to make him want you,’ your eyes are drawn to ‘10 policy positions that will make him crazy.’ ”

Until then, however, women of the right will have to settle for the calendar, which Easton hopes will be “hanging in as many dormitory rooms as possible.”
