Jenner releases campaign ad ‘King Newsom’ highlighting California governor’s pandemic handling

Caitlyn Jenner, former Olympic decathlete turned California governor hopeful, released a new campaign advertisement titled “King Newsom” in an effort to condemn Gov. Gavin Newsom, pandemic lockdowns, and highlight “the anger Californians have at Newsom for his hypocritical behavior.”

The former reality show star’s campaign video makes a harsh jab at Newsom’s infamous dinner at a Napa Valley restaurant in November last year, where footage taken of him appears to show the governor ignoring his state’s own pandemic guidelines by not wearing a mask in public and ignoring social distancing protocols.

“Gavin Newsom thinks that he is a king and that rules apply only to the little people,” a narrator says at the beginning of the advertisement.

The short advertisement underscores much of the public outrage that was expressed when it was discovered Newsom flouted his own pandemic guidelines while millions of Californians were forced to quarantine and shutter businesses throughout most of the coronavirus pandemic.

CAITLYN JENNER TACKLES MAJOR VULNERABILITY WITH POLICY BRIEFINGS

Jenner’s bid to unseat Newsom in 2022 has largely been reactionary to the state’s strict pandemic lockdown, as Jenner, 71, has come out as a staunch conservative against elite liberal politicians and big government.

“California was once the envy of the world. We had what everyone else wanted. The American dream grew up here. Yet career politicians and their policies have destroyed that dream. It’s been locked away, closed, shuttered, left in the dark, burned down. The government is now involved in every part of our lives. They’ve taken our money, our jobs, and our freedom. California needs a disruptor — a compassionate disruptor,” Jenner said in a separate campaign video released on May 4.

In addition to the 2022 challengers, Newsom faces a petition to include a measure to remove him from office that has gained enough signatures to be added on California’s election ballot later this year.

The petition reached 1,626,000 verified signatures on April 26, which is over 100,000 more needed to qualify to include the recall measure on the November ballot. Now, Newsom is facing pressure in the buildup to his reelection campaign while fighting against recall efforts and six 2022 hopefuls, including Jenner, looking to unseat the Democratic governor.
