Beam him up! David Waddell, the town councilman in Indian Trail, N.C., who memorably resigned his post with a letter written in Klingon, is now running for the Senate as a write-in candidate.
This week, the North Carolina Board of Elections certified that Waddell had submitted a sufficient number of valid signatures to qualify for write-in status, The Charlotte Observer reported. Although his name will not be printed on the ballot, votes for him will be counted.
Waddell describes himself as a libertarian and says that he is running on the platform of the Constitution Party — unsurprising, given that his resignation letter read in part, “Teach (the) city (the) constitution / I will return next time to (witness) victory.”
While his memorable stepping down gave his campaign a lot of publicity, Waddell acknowledges that he is unlikely to win the race. Instead, he sees his campaign as a mission to get the word out.
“I’m not going to tell you I’m starting to pack (for Washington),” he told the Observer.
Waddell is running for a seat currently held by incumbent Democrat Kay Hagan, who is also being challenged by Republican candidate Thom Tillis, speaker of the state House.
