Germany’s Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht announced her resignation Monday amid criticism of her job handling Germany’s response to the war in Ukraine.

Pressure mounted recently after Lambrecht posted on social media a New Year’s Eve message commenting on the war in Ukraine with the sound of fireworks in the background, according to German outlet Deutsche Welle. Members of the opposition Christian Democratic Union urged her to resign.
Lambrecht, a member of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party, has faced questions over her ability to lead the country’s armed forces. The 57-year-old had been defense minister since Scholz became chancellor in December 2021.

Germany has drawn criticism throughout the war in Ukraine, with many seeing Berlin as unwilling to confront threats to Europe. Germany is considering whether to increase its military support to Ukraine in order to help the country defeat Russia as the one-year anniversary of the war approaches.
