A former D.C. Department of Corrections officer has been sentenced for assaulting a D.C. jail inmate, officials said.
Victor Bell, 25, was sentenced Thursday to 10 months in jail and two additional months of home confinement, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. He pleaded guilty in April in D.C. federal court to a criminal civil rights charge.

On Jan. 4, Bell became upset with an inmate who expressed his disapproval of Bell’s pat-down search of another inmate. Bell admitted that he then followed the disapproving inmate and confronted him chest-to-chest. The inmate attempted to walk away, and Bell then grabbed him by the shoulder, pushed him into a corner of the corridor, and began punching him repeatedly in the head. He continued punching the inmate until other officers pulled him away.
The inmate was taken to the infirmary and had a cut to his right eye sutured, officials said.
Bell resigned from the Department of Corrections and has agreed to never seek employment as a law enforcement officer again, officials said.
