Background: Trey Gowdy returns, farmer Grassley, Trump sees coffins, nobody read Mueller report

The Horsemen of South Carolina are riding again.

With former South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy set to join President Trump’s impeachment war room, he will be teamed again with his Washington “brother,” acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney.

“They are sympatico, they speak the same language,” said a top official. When they served together in Congress, Mulvaney and Gowdy were part of what GQ dubbed the “Horsemen of South Carolina.” West Wing insiders said they are “psyched” about the teaming of the high-energy and combative duo. …

  • Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley is back on the farm, harvesting his first corn crop of the year. Standing in front of a red combine during the Senate’s Columbus Day break, the Republican told Instagram fans, “We just finished the first field of the Grassley farm of the 2019 harvesting season. It’s really good news that we were able to get a good yield considering the fact that we had such a difficult time getting seed in the ground because of such a wet spring.” …

  • President Trump gave a little sign into why he pulled the plug on keeping a handful of American troops in Syria last week. At the end of a long press scrum, he talked in unsettling detail about being at Dover Air Force Base with parents as their sons and daughters returned from wars in caskets. “They’ll run to the coffin and jump on top of the coffin.   • A new poll has revealed just how few Americans read the Mueller report on the 2016 Russian collusion charges. In Virginia, where there is a greater focus on Washington because so many work for Uncle Sam, just 6% of active voters read it, said a Christopher Newport University survey. “The overall percent of the population that has read the Mueller report is likely much lower,” it said. …
