Apparently time doesn’t heal all wounds.
Seven years after Valerie Plame’s CIA cover was blown, her husband, Ambassador Joe Wilson, is still shooting daggers at Karl Rove. (And strangely, not at Scooter Libby.)
“Karl Rove is a traitor, and he has institutionalized treason in his fear and smear campaign strategies that are funding the Republican Party,” Wilson said.
And later, “Every now and again I raise my glass to Karl Rove, because had it not been for his treasonous action, his action as a traitor to this country, I would not be sitting before you. I am a creation of Karl Rove.”
Wilson and his wife walked the red carpet and attended the Washington premiere of the film based on their experiences, “Fair Game,” Tuesday night in Silver Spring. The film, starring Sean Penn and Naomi Watts, chronicles the events surrounding Plame’s outing, especially how Wilson and Plame dealt with it emotionally.
During the screening there were huge laughs for the portrayals of Karl Rove and White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer. (David Andrews as Scooter Libby was quite convincing, too). There was applause when Libby was to go to jail. And, overall, the film received a standing ovation.
“It’s such a Washington crowd,” Plame joked afterward. “You totally get the whole inside baseball lines and things that maybe they wouldn’t understand in other parts of the country.”
Journalists including Chris Matthews, Andrea Mitchell and Bob Novak were all named in the film, but one female journalist was not. The scene shows a reporter calling Wilson a “traitor” at the Four Seasons. Who was it in real life?
“Ann Coulter,” revealed Wilson.
The film opens in select cities Nov. 5.
