News outlet forgoes party to donate to funds to Planned Parenthood

Variety has decided to forgo their annual Emmy Awards’ nominees party in order to donate the funds allocated to that event to Planned Parenthood.

The website, which calls itself “the most authoritative and trusted source of entertainment business news,” made the announcement Tuesday evening in an article published by their staff.

“Variety continues to advocate for women’s rights, including issues of healthcare and gender disparity in the entertainment industry, and we stand with Planned Parenthood and our longstanding partnership with Women In Film,” Variety editor-in-chief Claudia Eller and group publisher and chief revenue officer Michelle Sobrino-Stearns said in the article.

The decision from Variety comes a day after Planned Parenthood announced that they will be foregoing as much as $60 million annually from a federal family planning program that implemented new abortion rules.

The new directive says that organizations who accept federal family planning grants cannot provide their patients with an abortion referral directly.
