Court orders changes to prison terms for ‘El Chapo’

A federal district court ordered changes to the imprisonment of Joaquin Archivaldo Guzman Loera, better known as the transnational cartel kingpin “El Chapo.”

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York noted that Guzman successfully managed to escape solitary confinement from a maximum-security Mexican prison before making changes to the special administrative measures surrounding his jailing.

As a result of this week’s ruling, Guzman will be permitted to communicate with his wife through pre-screened messages, and his attorneys will be allowed to send pre-screened messages to Guzman’s family members.

The court also ordered the prosecution to halt any communication with the prison facility’s staff about the content of legal meetings at the correctional facility involving Guzman.

The court rejected Guzman’s request to be admitted to the prison’s general population. Guzman will return to court in New York City for a hearing on Friday, following the court’s order.
