Cruz defends Curt Schilling, attacks Trump

Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign unveiled a new ad defending Curt Schilling, the former All-Star Boston Red Sox pitcher, who was fired by ESPN, where he worked as an analyst and commentator.

The ad blasts Donald Trump for kowtowing to political correctness.

Schilling was fired after using social media to post about transgender individuals and the bathrooms they use.

“Curt Schilling was fired by the PC police for suggesting that grown men shouldn’t use the bathroom with little girls. Guess who’s joined the ranks of the PC police?” a narrator says in Cruz’s ad before a clip of Trump plays. “Donald Trump can’t be trusted with common sense why would we trust him in the White House?”

Following Schilling’s firing for arguing that, “A man is a man no matter what they call themselves,” Cruz has raised Schilling’s situation as an issue on the campaign trail. Cruz talked about Schilling’s predicament in an interview with conservative radio host Glenn Beck earlier this week.

“ESPN fired Curt Schilling for making the rather obvious point that we shouldn’t allow grown adult men, strangers alone in a bathroom with little girls,” Cruz told Beck. “That’s a point anyone who is rational should understand.”

The Texas senator’s routine stump speech on the campaign trail now includes a portion slamming Trump for suggesting transgender individuals be allowed in whatever bathroom they deem appropriate. Cruz often cites concern for his young daughters as part of his reasoning for supporting restrictions on who may use public restrooms.

Cruz is on the campaign trail in Pennsylvania on Friday ahead of Tuesday’s primary. He will visit Pittsburgh on Saturday.
