Fiorina: We are winning on abortion

Abortion foes are winning, potential GOP presidential candidate Carly Fiorina told a crowd at Susan B. Anthony List’s annual gala Thursday night.

Opponents of legal abortion need to engage with an “empathetic and reasonable” tone and they’ll be able to bring more Americans over to their side, Fiorina said. “I know we are winning on this issue, so we have to keep going,” she said.

Anti-abortion activists were overjoyed last week when Sen. Rand Paul, who is running for president, forced the question of how deep into a pregnancy abortion should be allowed into the political conversation. Conservatives have long contended the media doesn’t ask tough questions to abortion rights advocates.

Fiorina cheered that exchange, too, and said liberals “want to engage in the battle of sound bites and labels.” That’s not what conservatives should do, she said.

“I think it’s so important that we engage in pursuasive conversations, not in judgment, not in vitriol, not in labels,” she said.

Fiorina, who was the first female CEO of a Fortune 20 company and lost a 2010 Senate bid to Barbara Boxer, is weighing a presidential bid.
