FBI Raided Manafort—Hours Before Trump Tweeted Complaints About McCabe

Breaking news on the Russia investigation: FBI agents conducted a predawn raid on the home of Trump campaign operative Paul Manafort on July 26, according to a new report by the Washington Post. The agents had a warrant to seize documents and materials, although the significance of the documents seized is unclear. The Post reports:

The search warrant was wide-ranging and FBI agents working with special counsel Robert S. Mueller III departed the home with various records. The raid came as Manafort has been voluntarily producing documents to congressional committees investigating Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election. The search warrant indicates investigators may have argued to a federal judge they had reason to believe Manafort could not be trusted to turn over all records in response to a grand jury subpoena. It could also have been intended to send a message to President Trump’s former campaign chairman that he should not expect gentle treatment or legal courtesies from Mueller’s team.

Spokesmen for Mueller and Manafort both declined to comment on the Post story.

The raid is the starkest reminder yet that the Mueller investigation continues to grind forward behind the scenes.

As pollster Matt McDermott noted on Twitter, President Trump vented his anger against the acting FBI director only hours after the raid.
