The man who was aboard President Ronald Reagan’s campaign during his re-election victory against Walter Mondale in 1984 has signed on to help Donald Trump get to the White House.
Veteran Republican strategist Ed Rollins recently joined the pro-Trump Great America PAC as a senior adviser, Rollins told Politico in an interview published Tuesday.
“I’m not ready to roll over and play dead and allow Hillary Clinton to be president,” he said.
Trump has repeatedly disavowed super PACs supporting him and his opponents’ presidential bids, but the Republican front-runner has appeared open to the idea of allowing outside groups to support him in the general election if he becomes the nominee.
Rollins and his cohorts at Great America PAC reportedly plan to raise $15 million by the Republican National Convention this July that they would then use to reach voters in the general election if Trump secures the nomination.
The group has been active in the primary as well. In mid-March, Great America PAC announced a $1 million ad buy in several of the Northeastern states that Trump swept last week and have played a crucial role in placing him on a path toward 1,237 delegates.
Rollins told Politico that his role with the pro-Trump super PAC will be the last of his professional career.
“This will be my last hurrah,” the longtime GOP insider said. “I’m 73 years old. I can’t be doing this s—t forever.”
