McConnell promises ‘thorough and timely’ confirmation process

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell Wednesday promised a “through and timely” consideration of President-elect Trump’s cabinet nominees and praised his secretary of education pick, Betsy DeVos, as someone who can implement the recently signed education reform law.

“I fully support President-elect Trump’s intention to nominate Betsy DeVos as Education Secretary,” McConnell, R-Ky., said in a statement. “Betsy has a proven track record of important work to improve the lives of children across the country. She is an outstanding choice to implement the recently passed bipartisan K-12 education reforms that were signed into law and ensure that children, and not politics, remain the focus of education policies during the incoming administration.”

DeVos is a school choice advocate and longtime Republican.

The Senate must confirm Trump’s cabinet picks, which require 51 votes. Republicans are expected to control the majority with 52 votes.
