On the Senate Judiciary Committee’s final day of hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson‘s Supreme Court nomination, experts on both sides of the aisle are slated to testify about her qualifications.
Thursday’s hearing will include three panels of witnesses, the first comprising several members of the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary, which has said Jackson is “well qualified” for the role of succeeding retiring Justice Stephen Breyer.
Members of the senate committee will then hear from a panel of witnesses chosen by Democrats and another panel selected by Republicans. Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty will testify on the second panel along with a law professor from the University of Virginia and the president of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.

Republicans will invite Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, who is expected to speak about the significance of the highest court in regard to law and order, public safety, and the criminal justice system.
Thursday will wrap up an exasperating four days before the committee in which Democrats have praised Jackson’s experience. Republicans, meanwhile, have been aggressively inquisitive on specific cases in which they believe she was soft on crime as a federal trial court judge and in her past role as a public defender.

On Wednesday, Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin praised fellow Democratic Sen. Cory Booker for his speeches of praise toward Jackson. The New Jersey senator’s comments came in between bouts of Republican inquiries grilling her over her public defender work and several cases in which she sentenced child pornographers below the guidelines recommended by the U.S. Sentencing Commission.
