Julia Louis-Dreyfus: ‘Veep’ Is Not a Parody

The star of the hit political comedy Veep said Tuesday night that the wacky events depicted in her show are not all that far removed from reality.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus told Time that her show, which frequently depicts her and her political circle in zany and embarrassing situations, isn’t “a parody”. Time has the details:

When asked what moment from the 2016 presidential campaign season she thinks would make a funny scene on the HBO political comedy, she told TIME “our show is not a parody…We create situations that are plausible.” The best part about the show is that the humor is bipartisan, she said. “We don’t even identify parties on our show …”

Consider that the current election has featured the Donald Trump highlight reel, including a public debate about the size of his hands; the most plausible female presidential candidate in history being impeded by email woes and a 74-year-old democratic socialist whose comedic doppelgänger is Larry David; and an underdog candidate traveling to the all-important state of Indiana and promptly calling the iron apparatus of the state’s beloved sport a basketball “ring”.

Yeah, Veep isn’t that unrealistic.
