Girl dies, two family members injured in Roland Park fire

An 11-year-old girl died of injuries she suffered in an early morning fire Thursday in Roland Park, and her big brother and father remained hospitalized.

Abigail Young, 11, who was pulled from her family?s burning house in the 200 block of Ridgewood Road, died at Sinai Hospital, fire officials said.

Her father, Stephen Young, deputy copy desk chief at The Sun, was in critical but stable condition Thursday night at Maryland Shock Trauma Center. His son, Matthew Young, remained hospitalized at Sinai.

Stephen Young?s wife, Nancy, was not injured.

“The whole Baltimore Sun family is shocked and saddened by this tragedy that has struck our friend and colleague,” Sun Publisher Timothy E. Ryan said in a statement.

Capt. Roman Clark, a city fire department spokesman, said the single-alarm fire was reported at 4:16 a.m. Firefighters faced heavy flames and smoke coming from the first floor of the house.

Smoke detectors were installed but did not alert the family, Clark said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
