New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says Americans could care less about the three congressmen running for speaker of the House.
The Republican presidential hopeful, who’s ninth in the Washington Examiner’s presidential power rankings, released a video Thursday in which he blasted Congressional Republicans for hosting a “Game of Thrones” election to determine who succeed Ohio Rep. John Boehner as House speaker.
“It may not be the most popular thing within my party to be criticizing the Republican Congress, but it needs to be done. It’s a joke down there,” Christie said. “And now they’re having this ‘Game of Thrones’ thing and are putting off an election another couple of weeks.”
“I mean, nobody cares,” he added. “What they need to realize is … in the country, nobody cares who the speaker of the House is going to be.”
Instead, Christie says, Americans are more concerned with the attitude and leadership ability of whoever assumes the speakership.
“What they care about is, when you become speaker, will you actually do something worthy of the position?” he said.
House Republicans are set to vote Thursday to determine who they wish to nominate for speaker. The establishment favorite, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, is being challenged by Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz and Florida Rep. Daniel Webster, who was endorsed by several hard-line conservative lawmakers Wednesday.
