House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy dismissed the Chamber of Commerce’s importance and said it would not have an increased influence if the GOP won the House majority in 2022.
Congressional GOP leadership recently ousted the chamber from its reconciliation-related coalition strategy calls. The move to outcast the chamber is irregular, as the GOP and the chamber have historically been allies.
“I didn’t even know the chamber was around anymore,” McCarthy said in an interview with Punchbowl. When asked about the scenario of Republicans winning the House majority in 2022, McCarthy said the chamber would likely be as influential “as they are now.”

The chamber issued a statement on Monday announcing its support for the stand-alone, Senate-passed $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill without the rest of President Joe Biden’s $3.5 trillion reconciliation package.
“The Chamber fully supports stand-alone passage of the bipartisan infrastructure bill,” according to the statement. “The Chamber adamantly opposes the partisan reconciliation bill… We oppose any attempt to link the two bills–such that for one to pass they both must pass.”

“We will continue to fight to delink the two bills so that we can enact the long-overdue infrastructure bill and avoid the economy crushing reconciliation bill,” the statement continued.
