Brown blames staffers for lifted lines

Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown might want to check his website before its content gets to the publishing stage, as “American Bridge 21st Century” has unearthed some startling similarities between Brown’s testimonial on his webpage and sections from former Sen. Elizabeth Dole‘s autobiography, “Speaking from the Heart.”

On his ‘student resources’ page — which has since been changed – Brown offered a statement of principles, writing, “I was raised to believe that there are no limits to individual achievement and no excuses to justify indifference. From an early age, I was taught that success is measured not in material accumulations, but in service to others. I was encouraged to join causes larger than myself, to pursue positive change through a sense of mission, and to stand up for what I believe.” But the whole section seems to have been lifted from Dole’s book, where she wrote the exact same thing on page 326.

“American Bridge” – a liberal Super PAC which bills itself as “a progressive research and communications organization committed to holding Republicans accountable for their words and actions,” posted screen shots of the plagierized passages on Wednesday, which Brown himself blamed on a summer intern who lifted the lines as they were creating his website, for which Dole’s webpage served as a model. “They did it, we were notified of it, we fixed it – end of story,” he said, dismissing the idea that further investigation is needed.
