Caps D Mike Green inching closer to return

One night after a 4-3 overtime win over Columbus the Caps were back on the ice at Kettler Iceplex. Defenseman Mike Green joined them for the extremely optional, low-intensity practice. But it was a harder on-ice workout than he’s had in a while thanks to concussion symptoms related to his two head injuries in February.

Green said on Monday that he was at times still experiencing those symptoms on Monday. After practice Friday he said they have now subsided. Now he hopes to get in a full practice on Monday – still no guarantee on that – and progress towards a game before the Stanley Cup playoffs start in two weeks.

Green acknowledged that he’s started wearing glasses and contact lenses this week, but also said this was a different situation than what former Caps defenseman Brian Pothier endured two years ago when he needed special glasses to deal with severe post-concussion symptoms.

“Like I said it’s kind of day-to-day here with me,” Green said. “This is my first time practicing and it was an optional skate so it’s just a matter of me coming back when I’m ready. Whether or not I get a game in the most important thing is the playoffs.”

Obviously, the Caps would love to get Green back soon. John Erskine is still listed as day-to-day after suffering an undisclosed injury against Columbus. He will be re-evaluated tomorrow morning. Dennis Wideman is officially listed week-to-week by the team – though team sources say his absence due to a severe hematoma is indefinite at this point. Tom Poti (groin) skated again today, which is a good sign. But still no word on his return. Tyler Sloan played last night against the Blue Jackets and will again vs. Buffalo. Green said he isn’t putting any extra pressure on himself to make a quick return, though. With what he’s been dealing with that wouldn’t be smart.

“[Green] is looking better and better every day,” said Washington coach Bruce Boudreau. “We’re taking our tme, doing it right with Mike. Hopefully he’s practicing full with us on Monday…[But]t hat’s me without talking to [head trainer] Greg [Smith].”
