White House says ‘Republicans are lying’ about critical race theory in schools

White House principal deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Thursday that the issue of race and education in the Virginia gubernatorial election was exploited by Republican Glenn Youngkin, who won over Democrat Terry McAuliffe.

“We need to be honest here about what’s going on,” she said. “Republicans are lying. They are not being honest. They are not being truthful about where we stand. And they’re cynically trying to use our kids as a political football.”

The deputy press secretary also said that America is a great country but that great countries have to be honest about their history, both good and bad.

“Fundamentally, we believe a school’s curriculum isn’t a federal decision,” said Jean-Pierre. “It’s rightly up to communities around the country. The parents, the school board, the teachers, and the administrators. That means that politicians should not be dictating what our kids are being taught.”

Education was a major issue in the election, particularly the issues of mask mandates and the teaching of critical race theory in schools. Critical race theory generally holds that American power structures are designed to advantage white people at the expense of nonwhite people.

“Clearly, the Biden administration hasn’t learned that calling parents liars is not a winning strategy,” said Ian Prior, executive director of Fight for Schools.

Democrats hold that critical race theory isn’t being taught in public schools, with McAuliffe saying of the Republicans’ line of attack, “It’s racist. It’s a dog whistle,” on the campaign trail.
