House tax-writing committee to demand Trump tax returns

A prominent member of the Ways and Means Committee said Tuesday that the committee will demand President Trump’s full tax returns in two weeks.

“It will be fought out in the courts, and then possibly the Supreme Court,” said Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-N.J., who sits on the House’s tax-writing committee.

“We knew this would eventually happen. They weren’t going to simply take the letter and agree to it.”

The announcement comes a week after Michael Cohen, the president’s former personal attorney and longtime fixer, testified before the House Oversight and Reform Committee where Cohen said that Trump repeatedly bragged about not paying the proper amount of taxes.

From the onset of his presidential campaign, Trump’s taxes have been a target for all political opponents. He has refused to publicly release his tax returns, saying that his tax files are under audit by federal officials and that his legal counsel has advised against releasing them.
