A man suspected of approaching a 5-year-old playing in the street and shooting him dead is now behind bars facing a murder charge.
Darius Sessoms, 25, was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service and charged with first-degree murder Monday night for allegedly shooting and killing 5-year-old Cannon Hinnant roughly 24 hours earlier, according to WRAL.
No official motive has been determined, but police say the shooting was not random.
A witness to the shooting said that Hinnant was playing in the street in front of his father’s home when the person saw Sessoms, who lives next door, walk up to the child, point a gun at his head, and open fire before running away.
Hinnant’s mother says the boy’s two sisters, ages 8 and 7, witnessed the shooting.
Sessoms was reportedly on friendly terms with Hinnant’s father, and a neighbor claims the two had dinner the night before and visited with each other on the day of the shooting.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist the family with funeral expenses and has raised over $5,000.
“One minute he is enjoying his life, the next it all ends because he rode into his neighbors yard,” the page, created by Hinnant’s cousin, states. “5 years old guys!! Nothing prepares a parent for the loss of their child. No child should ever have their future stolen from them.”
News of the young boy’s death was quickly shared on Twitter by several political pundits and personalities, including conservative commentator and author Michelle Malkin, who tweeted “#JusticeForCannonHinnant.”

“5 yr old Cannon Hinnant was executed in front of his sisters for accidentally riding a bike on his neighbors lawn,” producer and director Robby Starbuck posted. “There’s no pain our justice system can impose on his killer Darius Sessoms that‘ll equate to justice. CNN & MSNBC haven’t even covered it.”
